Man Eating Fish...

A topic feared by most.
What will/can you do? when you come face to face with one.
For me, if I am to ever run into one, can only say a prayer and hope that it will pass quickly.....

Reports of man eating fish can be found all over the world. Where there is man and fish, it will happen, sooner or later!

I was unfortunate enough to ran into one such gruesome incident, yes, right here in Singapore!
lucky enough I am not the victim in this case, as for the victim, I feel sorry...

It was after one of the many fishing trips, as we stop over for a rest before heading home, and the whole unthinkable event unfolded, right before our eyes. It happened so fast that none of us can do anything at all for the poor victim.

I recorded the whole event with my camera, from begining till the end, but i will only post here a few photos, because the others are just too gruesome to be published....

Rather cheap Alkaline AAA Batts

Went out for lunch today and came acrossed something interesting.

A jumbo pack of 12 AAA size alkaline batt at S$4.95.
I found it affordable so get 1 pack to tryout.
Currently only my headlight uses 3xAAAs, the pack of 12 just nice made it for 4 changes.

Just hope it turned out well for the price.

Trolling Lures, 1st Boat Trip 2009

Weather was fine, bright day without scorching sun, with occasional light comfortable
breeze, beautiful day for fishing, water a little cold though, averaging 22 degree C.

Was invited to this boat trip due to a friend who cannot make it today, work commitments... Thanks for the invitation.

Part 1

Russell picked YF and me up 6.30 am and we headed on to
Fishing Buddy to get our bait for the day's trip.

Met up with KJ and Edmund at Punggol Marina, all high spirited, exchanged "greetings"
and usual horse play followed before we boarded the fiberglass boat. Jimmy is the skipper today.

Without wasting another second, we started fishing after KJ briefed me on today's trip and some details to the method used for today's trip.

It was mainly a trolling trip. We were trolling lures, at shallow water along the wave breaker at a very slow speed (like walking). The objective is to cover a very large area which is impossible by land based luring method.

Minutes into action, YF had a hook up, a moment of hesitation allowed the fish to get into the rocky cover, after a little tuck of war, the fish surfaced, a very good size Malabar Grouper (Epinephelus Malabaricus) estimated to be around 5~6 pound, but the shock leader was too badly injured by the abrasive rocks, and burst off the moment Edmund tried to leader in the fish. The Beauty was lost, along with the lure.

I had a solid hook up about 30 minutes later, the fish dash for cover, trying to escape, it succeeded in locking itself up in the rocky cover, but was freed the moment Jimmy brought the boat around to the opposite direction, and the beautiful Malabar Grouper was landed, weighted in at 4 lbs on Boga. Should it be land base luring, I would have lost it. Thanks Jimmy.

All was quite after that. We moved on, to another location for some bottom fishing, with bait.

Total landed for the part 1 of the trip. Nice quality sized fish. No quantity maybe partly due to the cold water, I believe.

We took our lunch while on the way to the next location, usual chit chatting and more horse play. Hahahahaha...

Set up bottom fishing rig and dropped the line down as soon as the anchor was set. The
waiting game started.

Jimmy was working very hard, he wanted to make sure that we all had our fun, and
fishes of cause, but in this kind of condition (cold water), that was about the best that he can do for us, appreciate your effort Jimmy.

The catch rate was bad, KJ landed a good platable size "Ang Kueh" (Crimson Snapper, Lutjanus Erythropterus), and an "Ang Zho" (John's Snapper, Lutjanus Johnii).

Edmund caught an Eeltail cat fish (Plotosus Canius), released. Russell caught another "Ang Zho" and an Orange-spotted Grouper (Epinephelus Coioides). No contribution from me. No Photo for this round too.

The catch rate was very bad. Had changed many spots still nothing.

YF had registered hit on jig at one of the location, but sadly no hook up, and Edmund got himself scared silly by a popper. kekekekekeke,.....

Late afternoon, we set off to the last location for the trip, for another round of trolling.

It was 5 pm now. All of us were pretty worn out, after the less than satisfactory bottom fishing earlier in the afternoon.

We started the game as soon as Jimmy signal us to lower our lures.

Not too long into the game, YF had a hook up. A Mangrove jack.

I had a take, and teared the lip of the fish I guess, and lost it, I gave a hard set while the boat is still moving. Stupid move. kekekekeke....

Edmund had a big take, but lost the fish due to cut leader when it was brought near the boat, we suspect that fish was a good sized Kim (Barramundi, Lates Calcarifer)
What a waste...

I had a huge hook up later, the fish tried it's best to escape, the fight was wonderful, Jimmy lip grip the fish and landed it after it was spent.

Yeah!! personal record broken by this 18 lbs Pickhandle Barracuda (Sphyraena Jello)

The beast was released without further harm.

Russell registered a hit too, but failed to hook up, suspected to be a barracuda also. Tough luck..

KJ suddenly turned serious as his rod made an ulgry bend, fish on! After some tuck of war, which sent KJ ballistic, yelling and screaming all over the stern in estacy, the fish was landed, a 15 pounder!

That concluded the first boat trip in 2009, closed with 3 personal records, 15lbs Barracuda for KJ, 18Lbs Barracuda and 4 lbs Grouper for me.

For Edmund and Russell who were down on luck for this trip, no problem de la, you all are such a good sport, will always be a next time.... Having said that, when are we going out again? kekekekekeke....

Surprise surprise, Ashlynn aka Ash aka Lynn aka Cindy, commonly know as AG (Ah Girl) is down with Chicken Pox (take care).

Guess what, an office girl in my company was on MC for Chicken Pox, now my QS is down with Chicken Pox, and is on 14 days MC.

I made a check with my friends, they too, have friends and knowledge of someone is down with Chicken Pox, the cases are from all over the island.

Wow...

Who let the chicken out? It seems like at this moment, only adult caught it, I have yet to hear case of children with chicken Pox yet at this moment.

As CNY is around the corner, it is ultimate "suey" (bad luck) to get infected with Chicken Pox Virus, gonna miss all the food man....

First fish for the year 2009

3rd of January 2009, 3 days into the new year, and I had yet to land my first fish of the year, haiz sad...

After a fruitless trip on the new year day, after losing a lure on the new year trip, after hooked myself with a lure on the new year day... I am in an extreme despo mode on this day's trip, on the 3rd day of the year...

After meeting up with Gary, SH and Abang Ali in the morning, we set off on the trip, hunting for our very first fish of the year.

Not long into the trip, a black tip shark was spotted at the shallow, attracted by Gary's Bitstream, luckily and unluckily, it did not take the lure, it was a 1 meter + long baby black tip.

We carried on, I got my suger minnow snagged on the rock, it never came back. 1st lure gone for the trip. Sad.

A small commotion broke out near the surface, Gary cast towards it and landed his first fish of the year, a baby Todak on bitstream, the first fish landed on this lure after 2 years, finally.

I lost my second lure, Daiwa SL14 Hokkaido special edition, soon after that, sad, sad...

Abang Ali had lost a few rubber by now.

We moved on, luring along the long stretch of breaker, trying our best to lure a bite from the fish, any fish will do in this case...

SH had a very strong take on the Norman Deep diver, the near full locked drag of his 2500 size reel cannot even stop the taker, he watched helplessly as his line was spilling out of the spool like water. All stopped after a few seconds, the hook fail to set in. lucky he still got his lure back.

I snapped on the Daiwa Morethan darting Z, feeling good and sent it out. Let it sink to the bottom, twitch it up and start "walking" it at mid water. on the second attempt, a fish took it from nowhere, it took with such a speed that my rod was twisted to the left fully bent in a split second, the relatively light 2kg drag setting did nothing to buffer the shock and the main line snapped in an instant. 3rd lure lost, sad sad sad...

Retied a new shock leader and snapped on the Smith Surger, sent it out and worked it all the same, and the same thing happened!! Damn!! No change to fight back!! 2nd fish lost, 4th lure gone!! DAMN IT!!!

Tied a new leader again, snapped on a spoon by pro hunter, shot it out, work the same manner, another fish hit, line was being pulled out at a very fast speed, and "piack"!! main line snapped! a gain!! 3rd fish lost!!! Along with my 5th lure!!! GOD DAMN IT!!!!!!

Not giving up, I tried again, this time with Little Bit, a tiny jig. It never come back, was snagged to the bottom the moment it touches bottom. 6th lure gone. $^%$&$%^*$%^$%#$%$^&;%*%$%*#%">#%$^%$&^$%^*$%^$%#$%$^&a%*%$%*#%!!!!!!!!

I gave up. But I STILL wanna get fish, extremely despo.
I switched to bait.

Set up my 4lbs class pole rod and started looking for cheap thrill.

SH hit something, I ran over and took some photo before the fish was released.His first fish of the year, his first fish on Deep diver, the first of its kind, and the biggest of its kind for him.A 2.5 kg Tiger Grouper (Brown-marbled Grouper, Epinephelus Fuscoguttatus).

Finally, after some work out, I landed my FIRST fish of the year, on pole.Yes, it a smallie, but, SO WHAT!!! ITS MY FIRST FISH OF THE YEAR!!! OK??

Me, 3 smallies on bait. YES! ON BAIT!, 3 huge take, 6 lure lost. Why me....
Abang Ali, a few miss and a few rubber lost.

Barracuda, the first, 3rd June 2007

My first barracuda (Pickhandle Barracuda (Sphyraena jello))

It was on the 3rd June 2007, a fine weather evening, all of us went to BBQ, it was Fendi's birthday. Without fail, as always, this was also a reason to gather and lure together, the so called birthday bash. Kekekekekeke...

The tide was low, all been working hard, but no yield. As time passed, only Fauzi and me were still trying

Fauzi with his sparkling new Abu Revo STX (just bought), casting here and there, trying to familiarize with the reel's capabilities, while I, stubborn as before, simply won't say die.

Out of the blue, Fuazi hit something, but no hook up, ended up with severe overrun.
This twist of event sparked new hope in me, so I chose to cast side way, along the breaker, hopping for a grouper and such...

Cast, pause, twitch, crank, pause, twitch, WHAMP!!!! Reflex kicked it, rod lifted, hook set, game on!

The drag was set insanely high (4+kg) for shore luring, but I was expecting grouper, in high snag area, either I stop the fish in it's path, or I lost the lure...

The fish dash out, trying hard to get away, but under this drag setting, with a bent rod, it took no line. Instead of a straight dash out to the open, it was pulled a large semi circle loop, from right, to the left....

The battle was over in under 1 and a half minute, it ended so fast that I don't even recall the fight, just remembered the strong thug, desperate pull, acrobatic splashes and the next thing is Fendi lip gripped the fish out of the water and landed it.

11 Lbs, it says, on the lip grip. Yeah!!

Smile, for the first of its kind in my record book.

The helpful bunch help with the fish while I settling down for the foto shoots.

First of its kind, and also the first to make it to the 1 meter club. What a blessing.

Time to go.

I tried to revive the fish after photo shoots, but I still can't do it properly, the fish did not look like it was going to make it, so I seek help from Thomas. He took over, within minutes, the fish gained strength, and swam off. Another one caught, and released.

Was ask to test out the lure after the cuda swam of, cast out near, reel, twitch, pause, OMG!!! It sank (it was a floating lure)!! All of them cheered, ever so happily, for my dead lure. What a bunch...

We headed out for coffee and snack, on me, since I caught the only fish for the whole trip..... Many happy faces I saw...

Die liao lo. Bad bad day for eging, lucky Alan never go. Still tried nonetheless. The Egi and line were coated with oil the moment they touches water! The Egi worst, cover with sticky stuff like tar, because it was pulled and worked on or near the seabed...

Zero squid for all. But lucky TT caught a cute sized Kukut on Egi. Kekekekeke....

What can I do? Well, wish them good luck on the trip, and waiting to read the catch report once they are back, while I have to keep myself BZ with my work.........

First Squid, Todak and Blue hind (Jan 2008)

It was Jan 2008, looking back, I’ve into luring for a year liao, been trying hard to add new species to my luring journal and yet there are still many empty slots to fill.

Eging, which mean catching squid on squid jigs aka egi, was something I had been trying for some time and still zero hit.
That day Alan jio us for some eging again, he is very into it if you want to know.
Packed up, geared up (with wasabi and soy sauce of cause) met up and off eging we went.

After some work out, finally I Landed my first! And many more! Wakakakakakakaka…..

First ever squid landed.
And others were not to be out done.

Some arrow head were landed

Even more…

And sashimi freshly caught squids on the spot, sliced up by yours truly.

The squid sashimi was finished up in matter of seconds...

Kekekekekeke……

The next day we geared up for luring.
After 1 year + of hard work, and 1 million and 1hits without hookup, finally on the 1 million and 2 hit, a firm hookup, and my FIRST todak on lure is registered in my luring journal! Yeah…..

That’s not all, another first of its kind made its way into my luring journal before the trip is closed, a beautiful Blue Hind was landed on Angel Kiss.

A very fulfilling and meaningful trip. Thank you guys, you all are such a good sport.

PE Lines numbering

We often see this on PE line packaging and on some rods and reels, e.g. PE 1~3, PE 3~6 (rods) or PE 1/200m, PE 2.5/200m , PE 5/300m (reels).... and so on.
So, what it mean?

Also, we may see these numbering on mono line packaging too. e.g. No. 2, No. 7 etc... On reels, No. 2/ 127m, No.3/110, No. 5/120m.... etc...
What it mean?

Of cause, many of you know.
But there are a handful of fellow anglers out there may still get very much mixed up by these numbering.

This form of measurement is a very accurate and standardized form and is especially used in relation to Japanese reels. The normal line thickness to line poundage would be 10lbs/PE or easily said, PE number X 10lbs; PE 5 = 50lbs. However, with the technological advancements nowadays, manufacturers have been able to produce thinner, stronger lines.

As for Mono numbering, similar to the PE's, indicate its standard diameter/thickness.

I do not have the table, but on the whole, every number approximately equal to 4Lbs.
As such, No1 about 4Lbs, No. 2 about 8Lbs, No. 2.5 about 10Lbs, No. 10 about 40Lbs and so on...

The rated strength of the mono varies a little among different manufacturers and brands. But basing on every 1 number equal to 4 Lbs is very safe.

Well, here we go. Last weekend the regular bunch decided to go to the rock, so, to the rock we went..
Good skies, sun was going easy on us too, and light winds all the time. Shiock.

Action was slow, every one was luring in a very relax manner with occasional small chats in between...

After an hour plus, and here come the star, its sudden arrival wake me up. " fish on!" I shouted, and Fendi scrambled to help land this beauty which pulled 2 1/4 Lbs. on the Boga. Beautiful.

Soon after this, another luring bro, Sufian, register 2 hits, lost 2 lure as a result... can feel his pain... When everything started to slow down again we decided to call it a day and left, wearing a usual satisfying smile..

Wonder why I can stop Kekekek? This my fist GAO on lure! :cheergal: KEKEKEKEKEK..

Chinese New Year 2007

It was Chinese New Year period, year 2007.
We all gathered and when for our new year bash, with the hope of landing at least 1 fish each, for good omen.

It was the first trip for my 2500R custom and Shimano Scorpion 6~14.
Almost all get fish during the day, and me? Missed 3 Kims straight, hook not set properly

coz I still not use to this rod, which is softer then my BC rod, all kim threw hook after

a short fight. I was stress one kind. Bad omen......

Night fall, still nothing for me, I was stressed to the core.

Roy walk over:" Come Roger, we go hunt them now." I followed.
It was lowest tide then, we walk in the darkness, both heros did not have torch light,

great.

Scouting around for hunting ground,atlowest tide, its a bit tough there. Finally found a

workable hole, we set up to work.

Roy was targeting to my left, I aimed the right.

First cast, almost lost the lure to the rock.
Made my second cast, pause and wait for the lure to stablize, crank, twitch, pause, twitch, WHAM!!!

The fish pulled strongly, the rod bent till butt, line spill out like water...
And it slowed down, I pumped and recover some line before thw next run.
Set hook again on the second run, I extremely stressed, worry phiew hook again, like in the day time....

Roy already by my side, getting ready to land the fish..
"wait wait wait, the fish not spent yet, still got one more run.." I said. The fish turned and made one last dash...

We have no proper fish landing tool, the biggest plier was a tiny one which the jaw is only 2 inches long. Best.

Roy grabbed the leader, the fish trashing violently in the water, splashing water all over.

I ask the million dollar question:" eh.... AH Roy ar..."
"what?"
"like this consider land liao bo?"

Suddenly I felt the whole world freezed over, Roy turn to look at me, stunted, can see a drop of sweat rolling slowly down his temple...

"eh.... consider la, consider la, see? the leader in my hand liao, eh.. land liao, landed liao..." Roy replied, still stunted.

"HUAT AH!!! New Year Fish!!!"

Sadly the fish never made it to see another day. Due to hero go fishing without proper fish handling tool.
I bought a Boga immediately after the trip. No more dead fish since...

The Beginning In The Past

Stage 2, posting up of old CRs and all that in between.
Here we go......

I pick up Luring in 2006, 12 years after I "hang my rod".
My shifu, Steven Lock is the one poisoned me into it. Kekekekek...

The following is on the 24th Dec 2006, my 4th luring trip.

In the morning of that fateful day, I had a quarrel with my ex-wife, she call my son an a*****e, That mark the end of our marriage.... and the beginning of my new life...

Trying my very best not to foul up the trip and all my friends, I proceed with the trip, acting as if nothing had happened... God knows, how I felt.....

The whole of 24th I got nothing, I do not expect anything anyway. Luring is never EZ, I understand.

"Merry X'mas Roger.." I said to myself in the 25th morning.
Alan had landed his record size queenie already, I was envious.

He ask me accompany him to the other side, saying he felt there may held something, he saw explosion. I followed.
After a long while of no taker, just as Alan had given up and I about to follow, I had a strong, solid hit. First fish on lure was landed.

We brought the fish to the others a short distant away, reporting the good catch. I had a culture shock, never in my life I had taken any foto with that fish I caught, the super star treatment put me in cloud 9. Thanks buddies. I love it.

Santa took pity on me, giving this 7 pounder as my X'mas present, to ease my broken heart..

The Beauty was released without further harm. My first catch and release...

The New Begining, Phase 1, Stage 1

Woke up to the pouring rain outside my windows...
Still feeling extremely sick over the SICKENING events the had happened... And I said to myself:" What the hack! I shall live my life, MY WAY, in MY SPACE, doing MY STUFF the way I enjoy most at MY PACE..."
And hence this Blog come into being...
